Yau Yee League Masters returned to the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens last year after a four-year absence and promptly produced their best-ever performance by winning the Plate for the first time.
Drawn in Group B of the Masters tournament alongside eventual winners Citi All Stars, Wallsend Boys Club, Singapore Cricket Club Tigers and HKFC Veterans, the amateur league representative side got their tournament off to a perfect start by claiming a surprise 1-0 win over the Citi All Stars in their opening game.
That victory – the only game the Citi All Stars did not win – was followed by a 3-1 success over HKFC Masters as the amateur side posted successive wins on Friday night. A 1-0 loss to Wallsend Boys Club – their only defeat in the competition – was followed by a goalless draw with Singapore Cricket Club Tigers as Yau Yee League Select Masters advanced to the Plate final in third place in Group B.
Another goalless draw, with KCC Veterans, meant the 2016 HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens Masters Plate final would be decided from the spot and it was Yau Yee Select who held their nerve to claim the win.
The Yau Yee League is Hong Kong’s top amateur league and their representative team in the Masters tournament features many of the best senior players from the competition.
Before last year, previous best performances had come in 2009 and 2010, when Yau Yee League Masters reached back-to-back finals in the Plate before losing to KCC Veterans and Team Bondi respectively.
