Another regular fixture at the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens, HKFC Chairman’s Select return having performed admirably a year ago by reaching the semi-finals and equaling their best-ever performance at the tournament.
Having previously progressed to the last four in 2010, the representative side opened the 2016 edition of the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Discovery Bay before posting a 3-1 win over USRC as two wins from two marked a perfect Friday night at Happy Valley.
HKFC Chairman’s Select returned on Saturday to play out a goalless draw with KCC Veterans before 1-1 stalemate with Ajax All Stars saw them advance to the Cup semi-finals as Group A runners-up. But a narrow 1-0 reversal to a star-studded Citi All Stars saw the local team’s run brought to an end in the last four.
A year earlier, HKFC Chairman’s Select advanced to the Plate final after two wins and two defeats in the group stage, but then failed to lift the title for the third time – after Plate successes over Bangkok Airways and Singapore Cricket Club Tigers in 2012 and 2013 respectively – as KCC Veterans ran out 3-1 winners.
Until last year, 2010 had seen the Happy Valley side’s best performance, when they reached the Cup semi-finals only to lose 2-1 to the Andy Cole All Stars.
With impressive tournament pedigree, HKFC Chairman’s Select will again be among the contenders in the Masters competition this year.
