HKFC Captain’s Select features players from Hong Kong Football Club’s six competitive men’s teams and are a regular feature at the annual seven-a-side tournament.
Last year the side drew their opening match 1-1 with Japan’s Kashima Antlers before a 2-0 defeat to FC Seoul. A 4-1 victory over Thai Youth Football saw them finish third in Group C, but a 2-0 loss to Kitchee in the Plate quarter-finals brought their run to a premature end.
The local side’s best ever performance came back in 2011 when they won the Plate for the first and only time after claiming a penalty shootout victory over Singapore Cricket Club following a 2-2 draw in the final.
The hosts have never reached the last eight of the Main tournament, but two years ago did manage another semi-final appearance in the Plate, only to lose 1-0 to Hong Kong Football Club as the Happy Valley residents went head to head.
Of the six teams at the long-standing institution, Hong Kong Football Club play in the Premier League while Lucky Mile feature two tiers down in the Second Division League. Albion. Colts and Wanderers compete in the Yau Yee League and HKFC also play in the over-35 Legends League. The club also features women’s, junior and social teams.
