HKFC Captain’s Select features players from Hong Kong Football Club’s six competitive men’s teams and are a regular feature at the annual seven-a-side tournament.
Last year the side advanced to the quarter-finals of the Cup competition for the first time with a second placed finish in Group B as they bounced back from an opening defeat at the hands of eventual champions Leicester City. A 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix was followed by a 1-1 draw with Japan’s Kashima Antlers to send the Captain’s Select into the last eight. However, a 1-0 reversal against Olympique Marseille saw them slip into the Shield competition, where they were defeated 1-0 by Cagliari.
The local side’s best-ever performance came back in 2011 when they won the Plate for the first and only time after claiming a penalty shootout victory over Singapore Cricket Club following a 2-2 draw in the final. In 2015, the Captain’s Select managed another semi-final appearance in the Plate, only to lose 1-0 to Hong Kong Football Club as the Happy Valley residents went head-to-head.
Of the six teams at the long-standing institution, Hong Kong Football Club play in the Premier League while Lucky Mile feature two tiers down in the Second Division. Albion, Colts and Wanderers compete in the Yau Yee League.
