Discovery Bay are back at the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens for a seventh time and will be hoping to improve on their previous two appearances in which they have been eliminated in the group stage having lost all four of their matches in successive years.
Last year, though, Discovery Bay could count themselves unlucky not to have got a least a point for their efforts in Group A after being edged out 1-0 by HKFC Chairman’s Select and Ajax All Stars on the Friday, before 3-0 and 2-0 defeats to USRC and KCC Veterans on Saturday brought their tournament to a premature end.
However, Discovery Bay have previously been known for bringing star attractions to the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens, most notably in 2013 when they boasted Teddy Sheringham, Peter Beardsley and Darren Anderton in their squad.
The ex-England internationals – who appeared at FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships in the 1990s – were joined my former Hong Kong manager Dejan Antonic and ex-Hong Kong forward Tim Bredbury.
However, the star-studded line-up did not perform to expectations and, after failing to progress in the Cup competition, were then ousted by Singapore Cricket Club Tigers at the semi-final stage of the Plate.
It’s been five years since their best performance at Happy Valley when they reached the last four in 2012. After progressing beyond the group stage, Discovery Bay defeated a Citi All Stars team featuring a host of former English Premier League players in the last eight before finally succumbing 2-1 to eventual champions Ajax All Stars in the semi-finals.
With a new sponsor on board, Tanner De Witt, Discovery Bay will boost their ranks this year with the inclusion of a number of former professionals who enjoyed successful careers both overseas and in Hong Kong.
