Discovery Bay are back at the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens for an eighth time and will be hoping to improve on their previous three appearances in which they have been eliminated in the group stage. Discovery Bay missed out on the semi-finals last year by a solitary point as two wins, a draw and a defeat saw them amass seven points, leaving them in third place in their group behind Citi All Stars and HKFC Masters.
Discovery Bay have previously been known for bringing star attractions to the HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens, most notably in 2013 when they boasted Teddy Sheringham, Peter Beardsley and Darren Anderton in their squad. The ex-England internationals – who appeared at World Cups and European Championships in the 1990s – were joined by former Hong Kong manager Dejan Antonic and former Hong Kong forward Tim Bredbury.
However, the star-studded line-up did not perform to expectations and, after failing to progress in the Cup competition, were then ousted by Singapore Cricket Club Tigers at the semi-final stage of the Plate. It’s been six years since their best performance at Happy Valley when they reached the last four in 2012.
